Korean people named their country Hanguk, which literally means country of the Hans. The flag of South Korea represents the Yin and Yang symbols, surrounded by four symbols representing the four elements: the air (upper left), the earth (down right), the water (upper right) and the fire (down left). These symbols come from the Classic of Changes, also known under its original name of Yi Jing or Yi-King. Each symbol has its complementary symbol (air/earth, fire/water, yin/yang). The conception of that flag was thus led by an idea of universal harmony. |
