Information: The United States, United States of America in its longer form, is a federation of fifty states (represented by the fifty stars on the flag), situated in North America and in the Pacific Ocean. Forty eight of these fifty states are situated on the south of Canada and on the north of Mexico. The state of Alaska is located on the west of Canada. The state of Hawaii lies in the Pacific Ocean, at 3,900 km on the southwest of California. Washington DC (or District of Columbia) is the federal capital of the country, and has a special status (it is neither a state, nor a member of a federal state). Other territories have a specific status, especially some states (former colonies) that are not member of the federation, but that are part of it: American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Porto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
