It has an extremely mountainous landscape, and was originally inhabited by nomad populations. A former republic from the USSR, Kyrgyzstan achieved independence in 1991. Kyrgyzstan is bordered by China to the east and southeast, by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west and Tajikistan to the southwest. With an area of 198 500 km², the country is completely surrounded by land and has no access to see. Kyrgyzstan is made of mountains only; to the east the Tien Shan mountains mark the border with China and culminate at 7439 metres at the Pobedy Peak (victory in Russian), which is the highest point of the country. To the west, the Fergana range (north) and Pamir Alay range (south) enclose the Fergana valley (which is split between Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan). The Pamir Alay range culminates at 7134 m with the Lenin Peak. |
