Information: Malaysia is located in southeast Asia, and consists of the Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (north of Borneo). It is situated at 200 km to the north of the equator. The term Malaysia or Malay archipelago was formerly used to refer to that area. West Malaysia of Peninsular Malaysia (to the south of Thailand) is divided from north to south by a long mountainous range whose highest point is at 2189 m (Mount Tahan) and which consists of large woodlands. The west coast is flat and has many swamps. East coast consists of long sand beaches. Cultures and plantations are mostly located on the coastal plains. The northern part of the country (Perlis and Kedah) is considered as the rice warehouse of the country. East Malaysia consists of the territories of Sarawak and Sabah and is situated to the north of Indonesia (Borneo). That part represents 15% of the population on 60% of the territory. It consists of jungle and high mountains (mount Kinabalu: 4100 m). It is bordered by Brunei (381 km), Indonesia (1 178 km) and Thailand (506 km) and has 4675 km of seacoast.
