Information: Morocco is located in the northwest of Africa. Its long coast bordering the Atlantic Ocean ends beyond the Strait of Gibraltar in the Mediterranean Sea. To the south of Morocco lies the disputed territory of Western Sahara, claimed and partly occupied by Morocco, despite the fact that its sovereignty is not recognized by the international community. To the east and southeast, Morocco is bordered by Algeria. Not far in the Atlantic Ocean lie the Canary Islands and Madeira. Spain is north of the Gibraltar strait. The name comes from al-maghrib al-aqsa or "the country of far sunset". The English name Morocco comes from the pronunciation of Marrakech in Spanish, marruecos, which gave Marrocos (in Portuguese), Maroc (in French), and Marokko (in German and Dutch).
