Information: Nepal is a small country (147 181 km²) bordered by China and India, whose altitude goes from 60 metres in the Terai, until 8848 metres with the Everest. This huge difference in height level brings a great climate and landscape diversity: subtropical in the Terai to the south, temperate in the central region consisting of hills and small mountains, cold and dry in the high mountains of Himalaya. Even though the major ethnic group of that country is of indo-Aryan language, until the 18th century under the Mall dynasty it was a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group, the Newar, which ruled the country. Newar is still spoken in the Katmandu valley. Other major peoples are the Tamang-Gurung-Thakali, the Kiranti and the Magar.
