Information: Portugal is located in southern Europe, to the west of Iberian peninsula. Portugal is bordered only by Spain and has a long seacoast with the Atlantic Ocean. It is a member of the European Union. At the 5th century, Portugal was called Terra Portucallis (from Portus Calle). That was the name of the two towns located at the mouth of the river Douro: Portu (the current Porto) and Cale (the current town of Vila Nova de Gaia). Portugal is divided in two parts separated by the Tagus. The north is mountainous and the south consists of plains. Portugal doesn't feature many mountains and the highest point (on the mainland) only reaches 1993 m (Serra da Estrela).
