Its capital Tunis is in the north of the country. Tunisia has 1298 km of seacoast, which make it a popular destination for the European tourists, who go to places like Hammamet, Monastir, Sousse and Port El-Kantaoui, the Sahara desert in the south, and archeological sites like Carthage or Dougga. Landscape varies from a region to another. The major mountain range, which crosses the country from the southwest to the northeast towards the Cape Bon, is the Tunisian ridge forming the eastern edge of the Atlas Mountains. Its highest point is the Djebel Chambi (1544 m). Climate is depending on Mediterranean and Saharan influences (especially the sirocco which is hot and dusty). Only one river flows on a regular basis: the Medjerda river, which empties in the Gulf of Tunis. |
