Information: Created after the downfall of the Ottoman empire between 1918 and 1923, the Republic of Turkey is mainly located in Asia (Anatolia), with 4% of its territory in Europe (Thrace). The major city, Istanbul (which was formerly called Byzantium then Constantinople until Ottoman conquest in 15th century), is located between Thrace and Anatolia, the two half of the city being separated by the Bosporus. It is the only city in the world that belongs to two continents.
