The southern edge of the Andes culminates at 5007 m at the Bolivar peak. It surrounds the Lake Maracaibo and stretches further east along the coast. The great plains (the llanos) are to the north of the Orinoco basin and of its tributaries, the Arauca and Apure rivers. The river empties in the Caribbean Sea through a huge swampy delta that covers the northeast are of the country. (Amacuro Delta). The southern area of the Orinoco, with its tributary the Caroni river, is wild and touristy. That region features one of the most famous places of the country: the Angel Falls, dropping down some 1000 metres. |
