| Massif du Sancy / Office de tourisme du - |
Firmly anchored in the heart of the Auvergne’s Volcano Nature Reserve, the Sancy Massif and its 10 districts (Besse SuperBesse, La Bourboule, Le Mont-Dore, Murol, Chambon sur Lac, Murat-le-Quaire, Chastreix, Picherande, Egliseneuve d'Entraigues and Saint-Diéry) is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Auvergne region. The Sancy Massif and its Puy de Sancy, the high-point of the Massif Central (at an altitude of 1886 m) and the highest volcano in France, offer a rich diversity of attractions and activities throughout the entire year…
In summer, Sancy makes the ideal holiday destination! With its lakes, rivers, waterfalls and natural springs so perfect for thermal cures, water plays the lead role in the Sancy Massif. Furthermore, 670 km of paths have been carefully way-marked, making Sancy a paradise for walkers and the ultimate adventure playground whether you are on foot, horse or mountain-bike. Water sports, fishing, golf, paragliding, climbing, the ‘Accrobranche’ adventure assault course… a whole host of fun and sporting activities to cater for every taste as well as numerous leisure infrastructures for children. The villages are also just waiting to reveal their heritage, gastronomy and local culture to anyone curious. A culture that is very much kept alive, moreover, through the fairs and festivals that are organised throughout the summer by the locals of this endearing region.
Is it true that you can ski on a volcano in the winter? If you would like a change of scenery for your skiing or to try out a winter holiday with a difference where family fun and relaxation can be combined with effort and performance, the Sancy Massif is just what you are looking for with its 100 km of downhill runs. Unless, of course, you are a lover of wide-open spaces, unforgettable panoramas and a preserved natural environment, in which case you might prefer the cross-country ski area with its 400 km of tracks or even one of the other possibilities for discovering the area: walks or snowshoe trips, tobogganing, ‘tubbing’ (snow activity on a rubber ring!), museums and arts & crafts. Without forgetting the bustling everyday life of the region and the people who look after you…with a smile.
